We are often asked to compare the effectiveness of a letter inside and envelope with a postcard. If you are doing a mass mailing, the primary objective is to generate a lead. That will be best accomplished by tantalizing the prospect and a postcard is perfect for doing just that.

No matter how you try to disguise it, your letter inside an envelope can still be identified as advertising by the prospect. The envelope creates an additional obstacle to getting your message in front of the buyer. A decision will be made in an instant whether or not to open the envelope to reveal the message.

Many prospects will simply toss it unopened.
